The MAS is a custom-fitted oral appliance designed to treat obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Snoring. It is similar to a sports mouthguard, lightweight and fits in your pocket!
The lower mouthpiece is positioned slightly forward of the upper mouthpiece, supporting the lower jaw during sleep. This helps to create more space in the upper airway and prevent it from collapsing.
However, they may not be suitable for patients with severe OSA or other underlying medical conditions.
They are also adjustable, which allows for fine-tuning of the jaw position to optimize the device’s effectiveness. The device requires minimal maintenance, which includes daily brushing before putting it away for the day. And a weekly soak in an oral appliance cleanser helps keep it looking and feeling fresh!

There are numerous types of sleep apnoea and snoring appliances available on the market, and we’re frequently asked, “What’s the best option?” The truth is, the ideal appliance depends entirely on the individual’s specific needs, underlying condition, and how each appliance’s design and materials interact with their physiology.
Choosing the right appliance requires a deep understanding of these factors. Is nylon or acrylic better for the patient? Should the appliance have straps or be strapless? Do they need it to be metal-free? Should the device incorporate a breathing channel or simply allow a breathing space? EPAP valve? How thick or thin should it be for maximum comfort and effectiveness? And, crucially, how far forward should the lower jaw be advanced to ensure an open airway without straining the jaw joints?
We consider adjustable (titratable) appliances to be the best option for most patients. These allow precise fine-tuning of the lower jaw position, gradually bringing it forward to lift the tongue and prevent the jaw from collapsing into the airway. This flexibility ensures that both comfort and effectiveness are optimized over time.
At our clinic, we are well-versed in a wide range of Mandibular Advancement Splints and will recommend the appliance that best suits your individual needs. We have extensive experience working with leading designs such as Somnomed, Oventus, O2Vent, Avera, TAP3, and innovative 3D-printed Nylon Dorsal appliances, among many others.
